Amazing Fleeces

3L&S Farms have been focusing on productive Romneys with beautiful fleeces since the beginning. Penny is not just a Romney breeder who sells fleeces, she is a Fiber Artist who might just enter a competition with a handspun skein of yarn or a favorite knitted sweater. She may also be sporting one of those sweaters while attending Fairs or Festivals. Penny knows the qualities a handspinner is looking for in their fleeces and manages the sheep, shearing, and skirting of the fleeces to satisfy the discriminating Fiber artist.

3L&S Farms Vends across the Midwest and offers raw, washed and dyed Fleeces, Custom Mill spun and handspun yarns, and sheepskins in the booth. Occasionally a hand knitted finished item slips in as well.   Since 1990, we have enjoyed exhibiting our fleeces in Fleece Competitions. In 2000 we launched into Fiber Shows as Vendors and now Vend at Seven different Festivals. In addition, we exhibit Sheep and Fleeces at Fairs and Festivals across the Country.

Fleece Quality

The making of quality Romney Fleeces is daily, 365 days a year. Fleece quality is a highly inheritable trait so breeding is important. On top of that the management of what and how the sheep are fed, keeping contamination out of the fleeces, timing the shearing correct and handling of the fleeces during shearing time are key components in the production of quality fleeces. The bulk of the flock is sheared in early December prior to lambing. The fleece weights on mature ewes range from 10-16# at shearing and at that time rough skirted throwing out belly, neck, or wool heavily contaminated with hay, manure or burrs. Fleeces are wrapped in cloth sheets and stored in boxes.
